Having a Servant's Heart

Story time! During my sophomore year (so like, almost exactly two years ago haha), I had the opportunity to go to Costa Rica on a mission trip with my school. During the trip, I got the chance to help ticos (Costa Rican children) through VBS and high school programs in schools throughout the San José region.

Unfortunately, on approximately the third day of the trip, I got really hurt and extremely sick. I ended up being sick and practically unable to walk for most of the trip and had to sit out of so many activities that the rest of the LCA team got to participate in. However, even though I didn't get to be involved in the "up front" situations such as leading music, stories, and playing games with the kiddos, that didn't stop me from working behind the scenes! For multiple days in a row, I spent hours cutting out kids crafts, sorting items needed for VBS, and organizing medical supplies. Even though I couldn't be as active as I wanted, getting to help out in any way possible was a huge blessing to me, and I learned a lot throughout the week as God taught me patience in the situations He had put me in.

Anyways, what was my point with that story? The point is this: God can use us as servants in any situation we are put in, no matter big or small. The catch is, we have to let Him work through us. One of my greatest passions is helping others, and I love being a servant in any way I can, whether that is through the action of physically helping someone or just sending a few encouraging words someone's way. God made us with hearts that care for others, and we should utilize that care by putting it toward serving others!

There are so many opportunities to serve in the community that oftentimes we don't even know about. Mission opportunities through school, local churches, homeless shelters, etc., are right around the corner, you just have to look for them! Sometimes this means doing research, other times this simply means knowing someone who is involved in a local mission service and can hook you up with details. For example, many local churches have weekly or monthly service opportunities that teens and adults alike can take part in. My church takes a group to the Miami Valley Women's Center once a month. Additionally, there are tons of opportunities to serve within the church itself every week! From nursery helpers to ushers and greeters, most churches would love to get teens to volunteer to help out every Sunday morning :)

There are so many places and situations where servants are needed, you just need to look and be willing to get out of your comfort zone in order to look for those opportunities! Use that caring heart that God gave you and help others in need around you. It's so worth it!

Hebrews 6:10 (ESV)- "For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do."

Possession by Katie Lowe

The past haunts her. The present hunts her. Possession by Katie Lowe is a thrilling story about ghosts, murder, and secrets that need to be let out. Years ago, Hannah's husband, Graham, was murdered. The police thought they put the killer behind bars, but Conviction, a true-crime podcast, wants to challenge the case they made all those years ago because they don't believe the real murderer was caught. The podcast brings up parts of Hannah's past that she would have rather kept buried, and people believe that she is the one who killed her husband. Everyone begins to believe that she is crazy, but Hannah knows that something isn't right. And she is determined to find out what's really going on. I absolutely loved this story! As a thriller and horror fanatic, I enjoyed getting to see a combination of spooky elements throughout the book. The plot was intense and action-packed, and the narrator was a bit unreliable, which I personally believe can make thrillers so much ...

The Stranger on the Bench

She drops her bag next to her on the worn bench and rests her head in her hands. Tears stream down her face as her heart continues to break into pieces. Memories flash through her head: firm hugs on cold nights, forehead kisses to say goodbye, and the best night of her life—when he proposed to her on the beach surrounded by flower petals. Now, he’s gone, and there is nothing anyone can do about it. The doctors said the car accident caused internal bleeding. They couldn’t save him in time. When they announced him to be dead, it was as though a part of her had also died. “Excuse me, miss. Are you okay?” a soft voice disrupts from the crushing memories playing in her head. She lifts her head and notices a gentleman sitting beside her on the bench. A cane rests against his leg, and his kind eyes stare at her with concern. She quickly wipes the tears falling down her cheeks and realizes she must look like a wreck. Surely the little bit of mascara she put on today is smeared around her eyes....

Trapped: A Short-Short Story

Rain pounds harshly against the window, waking me from fever dreams. As I roll onto my back and stare at the ceiling, I can’t help but re-live everything I just imagined—my fears chasing me at every turn. I realize I have been crying. Fresh tears rest beneath my eyelashes. I angrily wipe them away. The storm rages outside, and thick tree branches scratch against the wall of my room. The noise hurts my ears, so I pick up a thin pillow, pressing it to my face to quiet the sound. It blocks out nothing, and I groan, realizing that going back to bed will be impossible at this point. My throat feels dry, so I decide to try and sneak through the house to get a glass of water. I get out of bed and slowly turn the door handle. It’s locked. Of course the door is locked. I should have remembered. Every single night for as long as I have lived here, been trapped here, all doors in the house get locked as soon as the clock strikes midnight. There is no escape. If you don’t g...
